Social Media has played a major role in the development of technology over decades. It has proven both beneficial and a hindrance at times. However, we are going to focus on the many ways it has benefited the world amidst crisis management. Social media instantly connects us; we can socialize with people from all over the world in seconds. It also allows us to openly express our views to hundreds of people and depending on the social site you use, your post can be copied, reposted, and sent via separate messages to reach a larger audience.

Crisis management is detrimental to survival. Having a plan in place despite how unscheduled things may go can prove helpful in the long run. Let's take a look into what crisis management really is. It is"the process by which an organization responds to a potential crisis situation that threatens to harm the organization, its stakeholders, or the general public"(“The Importance of Social Media in Crisis Management - Prohibition PR,” 2022). It is further defined as a threat to the organization, a limited decision time and an element of surprise. With companies now utilizing social media for their companies it allows for a quicker response to situations by delivering the message using this technique. It is also used to alert communities of danger, allow residents to ask questions, and assist in delivering emergency messages in real time.

When social media chatter is ignored we fail to protect and alert people within an effective time frame of potential danger, live updates for a company and can potentially cause harm to ourselves. For companies who choose not to use social media, It can be difficult for people to work for companies that are out of date with current trends and events. This can pose a hindrance in the development of projects and company growth as well. In addition to posing a hindrance, you may become a target; think of it this way, you have free access to the information, but if you choose to ignore it, you may put yourself in danger. For example, if there is a company alert going out about a project you are working on and it states that the next steps have changed and you choose to ignore it you can become a liability for your company by not submitting or completing your work effectively. Furthermore, whether you are present or not, the conversations will continue without you, leaving you out of the loop. If you work for a company this will give competitors one up on you. This is difficult to recover from depending on the damage done.
